Winner - Number 29 - Christ Church in the snow. (Di Boulter)
I think it’s important that the winning image for the village website should be instantly recognisable as Smeeton Westerby and this picture of the church in the snow fits that brief perfectly. I like it because it is taken from a different angle to the normal front on view we usually see of the church. The photographer has got the colour balance and exposure just right, which isn’t easy in the snow.
2nd Place, Number 47 – Smeeton Westerby, the village at the end of the rainbow. (Penny Rivett)
Photographing rainbows is notoriously difficult but the photographer has captured the intensity and position of the rainbow beautifully. They have also resisted the temptation to put the horizon through the centre of the picture or try to and include the whole rainbow. This has resulted in a pleasing and well balanced composition.
3rd Place, Number 31 - Canal Sunset.(Iain Carpenter)
This is a fabulous sunset picture and the photographer has captured the mirror image reflection of the sky beautifully in the canal. I know this isn’t taken within the village but one of the things I love about the Smeeton Westerby are the lovely canal walks nearby. Technically the exposure is spot on, the colours are great and it’s a well composed.
Highly Commended, Number 33 - Dog with stick. (Iain Carpenter)
I love the action in this picture of a Spaniel with a stick. The raised tail and ears flying around really adds the exuberance of the pet. Capturing a picture of a running pet and getting it sharp isn’t easy but this image is very well executed with good focus and exposure.
Highly Commended, Number 37 - Allotments and the church. (Jo and Alan Hammond)
Including the church in this picture has made it instantly recognisable as Smeeton Westerby. It is nicely composed with a good balance of foreground, middle and far distance objects. The colour balance is a bit too cold and blue but this does help to emphasis the chilly feeling of the day.
Highly Commended, Number 14- Smeeton Westerby Montage. (David Stone)
This photographer obviously likes the village a lot because he managed to produce a montage portfolio of most of it in one picture. I particularly like the fact that he chose to take close ups of individual items as well as various scenes.
